You Can't Kill Ghouls
Fidel Castro underwent surgery yesterday and handed power over to his brother temporarily. Earlier last month, there was much speculation about whether Castro had died, and one piece of information feeding the rumors was that brother Raul had suddenly become a featured personality in the Cuban press. Much is made of the fact that this is the first time he handed power over to anybody, so perhaps there's reason to believe that Castro's health really is in a dire state, and that this announcement is one more example of an attempt to build up Raul. Biographical features on the brother have recently appeared.
There is much celebrating in Miami, but my thought is that Castro isn't dying anytime soon. As one of the richest men in the world, he has access to the kind of health care that most Americans would envy, including many rich Americans. For now, the U.S. is watching the situation cautiously. Babalu is probably the best place for updates, both on the Miami celebrations and Castro's latest status. UPDATE: Fausta's Blog has a ton of links and updates.
Technically, the surgery is to stop internal bleeding, and of course, we all know what really caused this problem. For once, the French come through for freedom:
