South Korean Abductee Educated To Become Infiltrator
The Daily NK has an article up by a defector from North Korea, Han Young Jin. He comments on what South Korean abductee Kim Young Nam claimed was his education. Kim, abducted from a beach in South Korea over 25 years ago, was recently publicly reunited with his mother in a ceremony in North Korea.
At a press conference after the reunion, Kim spoke of being educated at Kumsung University of Political Science, but Han believes to have in fact been at Kim Jong Il University of Political and Military Science. He bases this on Kim's claim that he worked in a government department "related to unification," apparently a euphemism for espionage against South Korea.
The description Han gives of Kim Jong Il University is harrowing. Based on the account of another defector, Ahn Myung Jin, abducted South Koreans are used as teachers at the university. The ideological training there is extraordinarily strict. Ahn writes:
Combatants consider 'self destruction' as the highest honor at the last minute of their lives. Kim Jong Il selected 'Self Destruction Theory' as one of the subjects and the 5th chapter of philosophy text is 'Revolutionary Self Destruction'.

Han Young Jin also writes about how North Koreans are prepared for such reunions:
One month prior to the reunion, families go to Pyongyang for training and education. They are made to say to their South Korean families that "We are living well, thanks to the General." To prepare for cases where questions are asked in regards to the system, they are taught methods to manage the situation, such as changing topics.
[...]
During the month families receive training at Pyongyang, they eat food offered by authorities and live a comfortable lifestyle. In order to create a bright facial appearance similar to that of South Korean families, authorities pay particular attention to the food provided. On participation of the event, a group outfit, shoes, soap, towel and other daily necessities are given.
The North Koreans are very careful to select ideologically correct individuals for such reunions, though in some cases, those from wealthy and influential Southern families are selected.
As negotiations intensify over the North Korean missile crisis, we should remember that North Korea, like all totalitarian dictatorships, is essentially a criminal enterprise. Their ideological pretensions are merely an organizing principle for dominating the populace and a means of corrupting the moral imagination.
